MCINTOSH, ALA. — PowerSouth’s Plant McIntosh employees reached a safety milestone on April 19, celebrating a full decade without a lost-time injury. During those 10 years, McIntosh’s full-time plant employees have logged 278,598 hours — 27,483 hours since April 2007.
“Each of you should be commended for your remarkable safety record here at McIntosh — no lost time accident since the plant began generating electricity,” said Gary Smith, PowerSouth President and CEO. “Management's goal is to make sure you have the necessary tools and training you need to do your job in a safe manner. I congratulate you, and I challenge you to continue your safety record.”
It is evident that Plant McIntosh employees make safety a top priority, and employees were honored for their achievements with a luncheon on May 1.
“Because we have a limited staff, our employees perform multiple tasks,” said Lee Davis, McIntosh Plant Manager. “The fact that we only have 14 full-time employees creates a unique atmosphere and close-knit relationships. Our employees watch out for each other. Safety is our number one goal.”
Plant McIntosh employees echoed those sentiments.
“Working in a power plant, you learn not to take shortcuts because it could jeopardize your life and the lives of co-workers,” said Gerome Guy, IC&E Technician. “Nothing is worth taking shortcuts just to get the job done more quickly.”
Barry Orso, Maintenance Technician, said that communication and planning are essential to the success of PowerSouth’s safety program.
“I begin to think about being safe even before I get to work,” Orso said. “As I drive to work, I think about my work day and plan in my mind how I will do the job safely for my co-workers and me. We’re like family here. We watch out for each other, and we check behind each other to be sure we’ve not overlooked a safety measure.”
The importance of safety has already been instilled in new employee Wesley Arnold.
“As a newcomer, I’ve learned from my co-workers that to be prepared for any job, you have to make safety number one,” Arnold said. “These guys have taught me the importance of safety on and off the job.”
