ANDALUSIA, ALA.– This month PowerSouth joins cooperative members around the country to celebrate National Co-op Month, an event to commemorate the cooperative movement’s history and achievements.
All cooperatives are not-for-profit businesses that provide an effective and viable products and services to more than 130 million members across the U.S. They exist to serve their members, meeting the needs of their community that might otherwise not be met.
PowerSouth Energy Cooperative, established in 1941, is owned by 20 distribution members who govern and set policy through a 40-member board of trustees composed of two voting delegates from each distribution system. PowerSouth is dedicated to providing reliable and economical energy to meet the needs of more than a million consumers.
“One of our biggest advantages is the cooperation between our distribution members, management and staff, and the end user of the electricity generated at our power plants,” said Gary Smith, PowerSouth President and CEO. “The relationship between all three is based largely on trust, accountability, consistency, quality, competitive pricing, efficiency and safety. We are devoted to ensuring our service territory in Alabama and northwest Florida has the energy needed to be productive now and in the future.”
Since 1930, Co-op Month has been celebrated annually every October. The national event provides cooperatives an opportunity to share their history and promote awareness of and support for the cooperative difference. This year’s theme – Local. Trusted. Serving you.™ – underlines the commitment cooperatives have to their communities and the trustworthy member service they embody.
“Cooperatives as a whole are recognized as a force for positive economic and social change and have provided significant social and economic value in our country,” said Seth Hammett, PowerSouth Vice President of Business Development. “Giving back to the communities we serve is an important part of our organization. PowerSouth strives to make a difference and be a good corporate citizen.”
Cooperatives around the world generally operate according to the same core principles, adopted by the International Cooperative Alliance in 1995. The seven principles include: voluntary and open membership, democratic member control, economic participation by the members, autonomy and independence, member education and training, cooperation among cooperatives and concern for community.
“Whether we are working to be successful on a local, regional or national field, we strive to be a productive corporate presence – contributing to the communities we serve through economic development and resource networking,” said Smith. “As a cooperative, we work hard to remain member-driven.”
