ANDALUSIA, ALA.  – Andalusia High School (AHS) students Haley Moody and Ava May have been selected as PowerSouth’s 2010 Youth Tour winner and runner-up, respectively.

In March, the students will join hundreds of other Youth Tour winners from across Alabama in the state capital to learn more about government, the legislative process and the rural electrification program.

As the AHS Youth Tour winner, Moody will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., in June to participate in the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s (NRECA) Youth Tour to visit the nation’s capital and meet with government leaders, along with thousands of other high school students from around the country.

The top 10 students from AHS joined area Youth Tour Program participants at Point A Lodge on Feb. 16 to learn more about PowerSouth and the electric industry, while interacting with their peers.

Moody and May were chosen based on their performance on written essays, written tests and an interview competition at PowerSouth’s headquarters in Andalusia.

Moody, daughter of Donald and Angela Moody, was selected as the AHS winner. She has demonstrated leadership through her participation in the AHS honor roll and was selected a member of the 2009 U.S. Achievement Academy. She serves as secretary of the Spanish Club and her Junior Class. She is a member of the Peer Helpers, Usher Club, Key Club and AHS Cheerleader Squad.

May, daughter of Edwin May, was selected as the AHS runner-up. She has shown leadership through her service with her church’s youth council. She participates in the Student Government Association, Peer Helpers and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She was a member of the 2009 All State Band, and she volunteers with Habitat for Humanity, Comfort Care Hospice and Meredith’s Miracles.

Anna McCord, Aubri Morgan and Grace Spears were selected as alternates.

PowerSouth has participated in the Youth Tour program for more than 20 years, sponsoring students from Andalusia, Elba, Opp and Pike County high schools.

The Electric Cooperative Youth Tour has brought high school students to Washington, D.C., every June since the late 1950s, and more than 40,000 students from across America have participated in this unique program.
