ANDALUSIA, ALA.  – Andalusia High School (AHS) students Lauren Powell and Amber Anderson have been selected as PowerSouth’s 2009 Youth Tour winner and runner-up, respectively.

In March, the students will join hundreds of other Youth Tour winners from across Alabama in the state capital to learn more about government, the legislative process and the rural electrification program.

As the AHS Youth Tour winner, Powell will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., in June to participate in the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s (NRECA) Youth Tour to visit the nation’s capital and meet with government leaders, along with thousands of other high school students from around the country.

The top 10 students from AHS joined area Youth Tour Program participants at Point A Lodge on Feb. 17 to learn more about PowerSouth and the electric industry, while interacting with their peers.

Powell and Anderson were chosen based on their performance on written essays, written tests and an interview competition at PowerSouth’s headquarters in Andalusia.

Powell, daughter of Roger and Cathy Powell, was selected as the AHS winner. She has demonstrated leadership through her participation in the University of Alabama’s Capstone Leadership Conference in 2008, as well as her roles as Andalusia City Youth Ambassador and Babe Ruth World Series Ambassador in 2007. She is a member of the French Club, and she serves as Spanish Club Secretary , Usher Club secretary, Anchor Club sophomore director and president-elect, sophomore class vice president and as a Peer Helpers member.

Anderson, daughter of Bridges and Victoria Anderson, was selected as the AHS runner-up. She has shown leadership through her role as Freshman Class President, FBLA Vice President, Student Council Representative and Sunday School Secretary at Nazareth Baptist Church. She was a HOBY Ambassador and was awarded for having the highest academic average in social studies at the AHS Academic Banquet. She is a member of the AHS symphonic and marching bands, AHS basketball and volleyball teams, Usher Club, FBLA and Kandace Club.

Marcus Ingram, Amber Thomas and Kaitlin Holley were selected as alternates.

PowerSouth has participated in the Youth Tour program for more than 20 years, sponsoring students from Andalusia, Elba, Opp and Pike County high schools.

The Electric Cooperative Youth Tour has brought high school students to Washington, D.C., every June since the late 1950s, and more than 40,000 students from across America have participated in this unique program.
