ANDALUSIA , ALA. – Staying true to the cooperative mission, PowerSouth promotes the general welfare of the communities it serves by acting as an economic stimulator.

PowerSouth provides quality jobs, makes charitable donations and pays taxes each year, benefiting the economy and strengthening the community. This revenue is turned over in the local area six or seven times, bolstering the county’s economy and paving the way for community growth.

By definition, cooperatives are highly involved within the communities they serve. PowerSouth operates by this principle, giving more than $177,000 in charitable donations to local schools, nonprofit organizations, volunteer fire departments and community events in 2009.

“Giving back to the communities we serve is an important part of our organization,” said Horace Horn, PowerSouth Vice President of External Affairs. “PowerSouth strives to make a difference and be a good corporate citizen.”

In addition to charitable donations, PowerSouth is the largest taxpayer in Covington County, home of its corporate headquarters. In fact, PowerSouth paid nearly $2 million in taxes last year. That tax payment was divided into more than $1.3 million for county schools, more than $424,000 in state tax and more than $163,500 for the cities of Andalusia, Opp, River Falls and Red Level.

Overall, PowerSouth paid more than $6.7 million in taxes in Alabama and Florida in 2009, including property taxes on PowerSouth’s electric generating plants, substations, district service centers, transmission line equipment and corporate headquarters. PowerSouth also pays taxes for facilities owned in 10 Florida counties and one Georgia county.

PowerSouth’s corporate headquarters in Andalusia currently employs more than 280 people. 
