ANDALUSIA, ALA. – PowerSouth recognized its McIntosh Power Plant employees for their awareness and dedication to safety — the company’s number one corporate value — with a luncheon July 28. The 14 employees completed a full year without a lost time injury, which means no employee missed work due to an injury suffered on the job.
“PowerSouth has six core values, and safety is number one,” said Gary Smith, PowerSouth President and CEO. “Without safety for our employees nothing else matters. My goal for every employee is to go home the same way they got to work. Remember safety is number one.”
The luncheon celebrating the McIntosh Plant employee safety record is the 12th consecutive for the plant. Since the plant went commercial in 1998 there have been no lost-time injuries. Collectively, 349,440 safe hours were worked by the personnel of the plant, located in McIntosh, Ala.
“It’s been another great year, and I consider it a honor and a pleasure to work with a group that puts safety at the very top of everything they do,” said Lee Davis, McIntosh Plant Manager. “I also want to personally thank our safety team for the great job they do in providing the safety training for our employees. Together they do a great job.”
PowerSouth’s focus on safety carries over into construction currently taking place at the McIntosh Plant as well. The addition of two new units at the plant is almost 95 percent and has brought in between 80 and 120 temporary construction jobs, according to Robert Meyer, PowerSouth Project Manager of Plant Construction.
“Our employees work together to carry out our safety program,” said PowerSouth Safety Manager Buddy Manring. “The safety record of our McIntosh employees is only possible through their combined efforts and dedication to working safely.”
The McIntosh plant recently passed another construction milestone with a successful fuel supply cleaning on the construction of the two new natural gas-fired units. The units will add 360 megawatts of peak-load generation to help PowerSouth meet growing electricity demand across its system. They are scheduled to be declared commercial in December 2010.
